THE SUCCESS OF MABEL BISCUITS

Mabel biscuits, a true icon in Brazil, were created by Italian brothers Nestore and Udélio Scodro, originally from the Veneto region. They were born in the small town of Crespano Del Grappa, in the province of Treviso.

After World War II, in search of new opportunities, the brothers emigrated from Italy to the Americas, following the path of many Italian immigrants of the time.

Upon arriving in Brazil, Nestore initially planned to pursue a career as a classical musician and even played in dance orchestras. However, he and his brother decided to change course and get involved in the business of assembling and selling ovens and equipment for bakeries in Mococa, in the interior of São Paulo.

The story of Mabel biscuits began unexpectedly. During a delivery of an oven, the customer did not pay. Instead, the brothers decided to use the oven to bake a recipe for coconut donuts that they had brought from Italy.

The result was so delicious that the biscuits began to be produced regularly, initially only for the employees’ snacks. The success was such that, in 1953, the brothers founded the brand Mabel’s Donuts in Ribeirão Preto, about 113 kilometers from Mococa.

The first factory was opened in 1962, with a daily capacity of 500 kilos of biscuits.

Until 1967, the treats were sold in a small fleet of vans, during which time the company began to professionalize.

In the following years, Mabel’s biscuits became extremely popular, winning over the public and becoming a must-have in children’s school snacks.
