The Pastel de Nata (or Pastel de Belém when referring to its original form from the Belém district in Lisbon) is one of the most iconic and beloved pastries in Portugal. It’s a traditional custard tart that has become famous worldwide for its delicious combination of crispy, flaky pastry and a creamy custard filling.
Origin:
The Pastel de Nata is believed to have been created by monks at the Jerónimos Monastery in the Belém district of Lisbon in the early 19th century. The monks, needing to use egg yolks left over from the process of starching their habits, began to make these pastries. After the monastery closed, the recipe was passed on to a nearby pastry shop, Antiga Confeitaria de Belém, which began selling the pastries under the name Pastéis de Belém. Today, the Belém version is still considered the most authentic.
