Clay filter is considered one of the most efficient in the world!

Clay filters work primarily with an internal filter made of ceramic, this filter is commonly called a candle, and often this “candle” is filled with activated carbon.

Water filtration is due to the ceramic porosity. Because it is microperforated, water passes through the ceramic and leaves without impurities on the other side, as solid particles are trapped in the candle. However, ceramics will filter out only solid particles, but not gases, and not the excess chlorine used to treat tap water. This is the function of activated charcoal, to make the water clean, odorless and tasteless.

How often should I clean the clay filter?

Ideally, you should do a thorough cleaning of the filter every 15 days or once a month. It is necessary to clean the outside, inside and, mainly, the filter – part that works as a filtering chamber, usually filled with activated carbon, to retain chlorine, iron, aluminum and other substances present in the water.

Always use the soft side of the sponge and avoid using cleaning products

To clean the filter without damaging it, it is best to use only flannels or the soft side of a sponge. This is because the inner surface of the container is quite porous, and this is fundamental to the filtration process. So, in order not to run the risk of scraping and affecting the porosity of the material, it is best to use only soft cloths.

In addition, another important tip is to avoid the use of cleaning products – such as detergent, alcohol, disinfectant, chlorine or any chemical substance – when washing the filter. Although it seems strange, the ideal is really using only the sponge to remove the dirt. Remember to rinse well.

Step by step cleaning the clay filter

1. Start by removing the filter from the inside of the filter and then start cleaning the inside of the container. The ideal, as we have already explained, is not to use any product – just a soft sponge with water to scrub and remove dirt;

2. Clean the outside of the filter with a damp cloth. Just rub the surface without using any product;

3. Now it’s time to wash the candle before fitting it back into the frame. Just place it under running water, rub with the soft side of the sponge and you’re done! Also, it is important that you wait for the candle to dry completely before placing it inside the filter again;
