The Setúbal Peninsula is one of Portugal’s most charismatic wine regions, located just south of Lisbon, between the Tagus estuary, the Arrábida mountains, and the Atlantic Ocean. Its Mediterranean climate, tempered by maritime breezes, along with sandy and limestone soils, creates exceptional conditions for producing expressive wines with a true sense of place.

The region is world-renowned for its Moscatel de Setúbal, one of Portugal’s most iconic fortified wines, celebrated for its aromatic intensity and unmistakable character. But Setúbal also shines through its robust and aromatic reds, often crafted from the region’s signature grape Castelão. Alongside it, varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, and Aragonez yield complex, full-bodied wines with excellent aging potential.

On the white side, fresh and fruity wines made from Fernão Pires, Arinto, and Verdelho reflect the Atlantic influence and the diversity of the terroir, while the rosés stand out for their lightness, freshness, and modern appeal.

ALICANTE BOUSCHET RESERVA

A garnet-coloured wine that is almost opaque. An aroma reminiscent of very ripe dark fruit preserves, with floral notes that are typical of this grape variety. Velvety and full on the palate, with very well integrated tannins. A long and persistent finish.

Vineyards in Fernando Pó, Palmela on sandy soil in mediterranean climate. Fermentation in stainless steel vats, with temperature control and extended maceration. Matured for 12 months in half barrels of French and American oak.

Grape: Alicante Bouschet

Alcoholic Content: 14.5% Vol.

Drinking Temperature: 16 – 18 ºc

CABERNET SAUVIGNON RESERVA

A concentrated wine in tones of ruby and garnet. An aroma reminiscent of very ripe dark fruit preserves, with some spice and the touch of balsamic that is emblematic of this grape variety. Velvety and full on the palate, with very well integrated tannins. A long, pleasant and persistent finish.

Grape: Cabernet Sauvignon

Alcoholic Content: 14.5% Vol.

MERLOT RESERVA

This wine has an aroma heavy in dark fruit such as plum and blackberry, with a touch of ripe pepper typical of this grape variety. Body is full and dense, with soft tannins. An extremely pleasant, lingering finish.

Casa Ermelinda Freitas has been producing wine since 1920.
The 550 hectares of vineyards are located in Fernando Pó, a prime area in the region of Palmela, 60% of which is dedicated to the Castelão variety, 20% to red varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, Syrah, Aragonês, Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Franca, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Pinot Noir, Trincadeira, Petite Sirah, Carmenére, Moscatel Roxo, and 20% to white grapes, such as Fernão Pires, Chardonnay, Arinto, Verdelho, Sauvignon Blanc, Moscatel de Setúbal, Viosinho, Encruzado, Alvarinho, Pinot Grigio, Viognier, Vermentino and Gewürztraminer, making a total of 29 different varieties currently being cultivated at Casa Ermelinda Freitas.
